Gartner pronounced that Enterprise Content Management (ECM) was dead earlier this year. What they meant is that the term ECM is no longer an appropriate term to describe the management of a company’s information.

ECM is a term “meant to encompass the many facets of managing the lifecycle of unstructured information across an enterprise.”   It describes the strategy of operations for managing information at a business.

Some companies want to use the term “Content Services” as the replacement term for ECM. However, it is the opinion of many that content services are just a subset of features within ECM and the term doesn’t encompass the whole picture. Others believe that the term “Intelligent Information Management” is best.
